The long-standing connection between the Transformers and Macross franchises is being celebrated in a major way with a brand-new collaborative toy. At this year’s Shizuoka Hobby Show 2025, Takara unveiled several upcoming figures, including a standout prototype from the Synergenex toy line—Basara Prime.
Basara Prime Prototype Unveiled
The Basara Prime figure, also known as Basara Convoy, blends the world of Macross 7 with iconic Transformers design elements. Based on the character Basara Nekki, the figure includes a guitar accessory and can be posed with it in robot mode. The figure also features a sound stage-style trailer that serves as a battle station, complete with speakers and a microphone stand—paying tribute to Generation 1 Optimus Prime’s iconic trailer.
Additional features include a blaster, a shield, and what appear to be interchangeable face parts. Unlike the traditional Optimus Prime, Basara Prime transforms into a VF-19 Excalibur Custom jet fighter instead of a truck. Both modes were shown as unpainted gray prototypes during the event.
Synergenex Line: A Fusion of Franchises
The Synergenex series from Takara is known for blending Transformers and Diaclone with other well-known franchises. Past collaborations have included brands like Godzilla, Monster Hunter, Patlabor, and now Macross.
The connection between Transformers and Macross dates back to the character Jetfire, whose original toy was a repaint of the VF-1 Valkyrie from Macross. Due to licensing issues, the character evolved separately in the animated series as Skyfire, but later toys have blended both designs.
Macross Revival and Streaming Availability
Interest in the Macross franchise has been growing recently, with many of its anime entries now available for international streaming on Hulu. This includes titles beyond the original series and its film adaptations, bringing the franchise to a new global audience.
While no release date or price has been announced yet for the Basara Prime figure, fans of both mecha franchises are already excited for what’s to come.
