The upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has been delayed, Nintendo announced on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Originally scheduled for release on March 26, 2027, the film will now premiere on May 7, 2027. The change was confirmed by Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, who cited “production reasons” for the delay.
“This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027,” he stated. “It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”
The movie is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Nintendo. Crunchyroll, which reported the update, is jointly operated by Sony and Japan’s Aniplex.
The announcement follows continued interest in the Zelda franchise. The latest video game installment, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, arrived after the major success of Tears of the Kingdom, a sequel to the critically acclaimed Breath of the Wild.
Nintendo describes Tears of the Kingdom as a journey through Hyrule’s vast landscapes and floating sky islands, where players use new abilities to confront threats against the kingdom.
The delay may come as a disappointment to fans, but Nintendo’s message emphasizes its focus on quality as the team works to bring the iconic franchise to the big screen.
