After years of silence and disappointment, fans of the 2016 anime Yuri on Ice finally have something to celebrate.
Hulu has officially announced that the critically acclaimed boys’ love sports drama will be added to its streaming library on June 3, 2025, marking the first time the show will be available outside of Crunchyroll.
The announcement comes in the wake of the official cancellation of Yuri on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence, a long-delayed project that was originally announced back in April 2017. Despite high anticipation and a 2018 teaser trailer, the project faced multiple delays before its cancellation was confirmed in April 2024.
The Anime That Changed Everything
First airing in October 2016, Yuri on Ice was a 12-episode series produced by animation powerhouse MAPPA. The story follows Yuri Katsuki, a down-on-his-luck figure skater who rediscovers his passion for the sport under the guidance of his idol and coach, Victor Nikiforov. The anime broke new ground with its emotionally resonant narrative and central romantic relationship between two men, which earned it accolades from both fans and critics.
It also played a key role in the anime streaming boom, helping establish Crunchyroll as a premier destination for anime viewers worldwide. With its blend of sports drama, personal redemption, and tender romance,
Yuri on Ice quickly became a cultural touchstone for the LGBTQIA+ anime community.
Movie Canceled, But Not Forgotten
Although fans held out hope for Ice Adolescence, the film’s cancellation came as a harsh but unsurprising blow. MAPPA cited low profits from the anime compared to other production committee members and eventually shuttered its boys-love division in May 2025. The lack of transparency regarding the film’s development only fueled frustration within the fanbase.
What to Expect on Hulu
Hulu’s June 2025 lineup will include all 12 episodes of Yuri on Ice Season 1, available in both the original Japanese with English subtitles and an English dubbed version. The dub features Jessie James Grelle as Yuri Katsuki and Jerry Jewell as Victor Nikiforov.
The official series synopsis reads:
“Yuri Katsuki carried the hope of all Japan on his shoulders in the Figure Skating Grand Prix, but suffered a crushing defeat in the finals. He returned to his hometown in Kyushu and hid away in his family’s home, half wanting to continue skating and half wanting to retire. That was when the five-time consecutive world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly showed up with his teammate, Yuri Plisetsky, a young skater starting to surpass his seniors. And so the two Yuris and the Russian champion Viktor set out to compete in a Grand Prix like none the world has ever seen!”
For fans old and new, this Hulu release is a chance to revisit—or discover for the first time—one of anime’s most heartfelt stories of self-discovery, love, and ambition.
Yuri on Ice begins streaming June 3, 2025, exclusively on Hulu.
