Despite being created by Shinichiro Watanabe, the legendary director behind Cowboy Bebop, the anime series Lazarus has remained mostly under the radar. Fans were initially excited, but the show’s early episodes received mixed reviews. Many viewers were disappointed by the slow pacing and unique storytelling, which differed from Watanabe’s earlier works.
However, by Episode 8, titled “Unforgettable Fire”, the story has started to pick up speed. Episode 7 introduced major plot twists that changed what fans thought they knew about the Lazarus Team and their leader, Hersch.
Major Revelations in Episode 7
Episode 7 revealed that Hersch once had a close relationship with Dr. Skinner, the scientist behind the dangerous drug known as Hapna. Hersch disappeared without warning, leaving Skinner and the rest of the team in the dark.
Meanwhile, team member Axel realized that Skinner has been manipulating their journey, guiding them to locations he personally chose. It seems Skinner wants the group to understand his point of view and the reasons behind creating Hapna.
Just as the group tried to move forward, Chris was kidnapped by special agents at the end of Episode 7, leaving the team shaken and desperate.
What to Expect from Episode 8
With Chris missing and tensions high, Episode 8 promises to be a turning point in the series. Titled “Unforgettable Fire”, the episode is expected to deliver intense action and key story developments.
Lazarus Episode 8 will air first on Adult Swim as part of the Toonami block on May 24 at 12:00 AM EST (technically May 25). It will be available for streaming on HBO Max later that morning, around 9:30 AM EST.
Subbed vs. Dubbed: What to Know
All new episodes of Lazarus premiere in English Dub on Adult Swim and HBO Max. The Japanese version with English subtitles is released on Max about two weeks later. Episode 8’s subbed version is scheduled for June 5.
Although the English Dub received early criticism, the voice actors have since gained praise for their performances. Fans now consider both versions worth watching.
