The 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards are set to take place this weekend, but one major winner has already been announced. Ahead of the main ceremony, Crunchyroll has revealed the first recipient of its newly introduced Global Impact Award: the internationally acclaimed anime series Attack on Titan.
The award, reported via Variety, honors “visionary creators and groundbreaking works that have left an indelible mark on culture, history, and the hearts of audiences around the world.” Attack on Titan fits that description, having become a global phenomenon since its anime debut in 2013. The series concluded in late 2023 with The Final Chapters (Part 2), capping off its four-season run.
The franchise’s influence continued into 2024 and 2025 with the release of Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, a theatrical compilation of the anime’s finale, remastered with enhanced visuals and sound. The film premiered in Japan on November 8, 2024, and in the United States on February 10, 2025.
Based on the manga by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan has received widespread critical acclaim. Three of its seasons earned perfect 100% critic ratings and over 90% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes, further cementing its impact on anime and pop culture at large.
“This year, we’re proud to introduce the new Global Impact Award,” said Gita Rebbapragada, Chief Operating Officer at Crunchyroll. “It’s a recognition of the series and films that are changing popular culture and making a lasting impression on global fans.” She also referenced a recent study conducted with the National Research Group, which highlighted anime’s significance to Gen Z and its growing cultural relevance.
The ninth annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards will be held in Tokyo on Sunday, May 25, at 4 a.m. EST, with a live broadcast available via Crunchyroll’s official YouTube and Twitch channels. The event will be hosted by voice actor Sally Amaki and entertainer Jon Kabira, and will feature celebrity presenters including Grammy Award winner Kacey Musgraves and Stranger Things stars Finn Wolfhard and Gaten Matarazzo.
A representative from animation studio MAPPA, which produced the final season of Attack on Titan, will accept the Global Impact Award on behalf of the creative team behind the landmark series.
