Muse Asia has officially acquired the licensing rights for the upcoming anime adaptation of Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon: My Trusted Companions Tried to Kill Me, But Thanks to the Gift of an Unlimited Gacha I Got LVL 9999 Friends and Am Out For Revenge on My Former Party Members. The series is based on the light novels by Shisui Meikyou, with illustrations by tef. Distribution details will be announced at a later date.
The anime is scheduled to premiere in fall 2025 and is being produced by J.C.STAFF. Katsushi Sakurabi (Flying Witch, The Betrayal Knows My Name) is directing, with Hiroshi Ohnogi (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) handling the series composition and script. Character designs are by Yukie Suzuki (Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-), while Yoshikazu Iwanami (Fate/Zero, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) serves as sound director. Music is composed by Ryō Takahashi (Wind Breaker, High Card).
J-Novel Club, which publishes the light novel in English, describes the plot:
Light is betrayed by his trusted party members and left for dead in the Abyss, the world’s most dangerous dungeon. On the brink of death, he activates his only magical skill—Unlimited Gacha. Once thought useless, the skill suddenly summons Mei, a powerful and beautiful Level 9999 maid warrior.
Three years later, Light has built a new life in the depths of the Abyss, ruling over a kingdom of powerful allies summoned via the Gacha. Now a Level 9999 Overlord, Light sets out to return to the surface and exact revenge on those who betrayed him.
The series began as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in April 2020. Hobby Japan released the first volume in print in May 2021, with the 12th volume set to release on May 31. A manga adaptation by Takashi Ohmae began serialization on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket website in May 2021. The manga’s 16th volume was released on May 9, and Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed it in English.
With a mix of betrayal, dark fantasy, and overpowered revenge, Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon is one of the more highly anticipated anime titles of the fall season.
