The 4K restoration of Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago), the 1985 OVA directed by Mamoru Oshii, will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The screening is set for May 20 in the festival’s “Cinéma de la Plage” section.
Cinéma de la Plage (Cinema on the Beach) features free nightly screenings on a giant screen set up on the sandy beach near the main venue. The 4K restoration version will be shown for the first time during this event.
Angel’s Egg was the first original OVA written and directed by Mamoru Oshii, best known for Ghost in the Shell. It also marked his first collaboration with renowned illustrator Yoshitaka Amano. The 71-minute OVA was released in Japan on December 15, 1985, and also had a limited theatrical run.
The 4K restoration has been produced to celebrate the anime’s 40th anniversary. GKIDS will release the restored version in North American theaters in 2025.
The official Cannes Film Festival description of Angel’s Egg reads:
Set in a submerged city, the story follows a young girl who cares for a large egg, believing it to be the egg of an angel. A boy with a huge gun arrives in a strange chariot, searching for a bird he saw in a dream. In the ruins of the city, a fragile bond forms between the two, but one night, the boy crushes the girl’s egg.
