As we enter 2025, it’s the perfect time to reflect on 2024, especially when it comes to the top Google searches in Japan.
The anime Mashle: Magic and Muscles has had a standout year, topping the list for anime-related searches. Its second season’s opening theme song, “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” by Creepy Nuts, also claimed the top spot in the “Hanauta Kensaku” (humming search) category.
Following Mashle in the anime category were DAN DA DAN in second place, Kaiju No. 8 in third, My Deer Friend Nokotan in fourth, and The Elusive Samurai in fifth.
In the trending searches category, the late Akira Toriyama ranked seventh, with Mashle: Magic and Muscles securing the tenth spot.
Toriyama also appeared third in the “People” search category, while the late manga creator Hinako Ashihara, known for Sexy Tanaka-san, came in tenth.
In the movie search category, the live-action adaptation of Uketsu’s Hen na Ie (The Strange House) topped the list. HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle (Gekijōban Haikyu!! Gomi Suteba no Kessen) came in third, and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back anime film secured fifth place. The anime film Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM ranked eighth, while live-action films Sensei’s Pious Lie (Sensei no Shiroi Uso) and Natsume Arata no Kekkon (Arata Natsume’s Marriage) rounded out the rankings at ninth and tenth.
Two other anime theme songs also made it to the humming search rankings. “Lilac,” the opening theme for Oblivion Battery by Mrs. Green Apple, came in sixth, and the theme song “Time Paradox” from the Doraemon movie Nobita’s Earth Symphony by Vaundy ranked ninth.
