Rick and Morty Weighs in on the U.S. TikTok Ban, Tech Bros, and More

by Hazel

In today’s world, if you’re looking for a clearer perspective on the chaos around us, sometimes it’s the comedians and satirists who offer more insight than traditional “news networks.” So, when Rick and Morty weighed in on the TikTok debate in the U.S., we weren’t exactly shocked—but we were impressed with how spot-on it was.

Season 4, Episode 2, “The Old Man and the Seat” (directed by Jacob Hair and written by Michael Waldron), delivers a surprisingly sharp commentary on the TikTok ban controversy. For those who missed it, the U.S. Supreme Court recently upheld a law banning TikTok starting January 19th unless app owner ByteDance divests from the platform. Proponents of the ban argue that TikTok is essentially a data pipeline for the Chinese government. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump is reportedly looking for a way to save the app, with TikTok doing its part by cozying up to Trump with an investment and presence at his second inauguration.
