In the world of One Piece, Devil Fruits are most often associated with combat, as nearly every Devil Fruit power can be harnessed to deal damage or incapacitate an opponent. However, there are some Devil Fruits that stand out for their non-combat uses. These unique abilities don’t necessarily serve a direct combat function but offer a wide range of utilities that make them valuable in other ways.
While the users of these Devil Fruits still possess some combat skills, their powers are more useful in creative and strategic applications. Here are some of the most interesting Devil Fruits that aren’t primarily used for combat.
1. Mane Mane no Mi
User: Bentham “Mr. 2 Bon Clay” and Kurozumi Higurashi (Formerly)
Debut: Chapter 156 (Manga), Episode 92 (Anime)
Bentham, formerly known as Mr. 2 Bon Clay, used the Mane Mane no Mi, a Devil Fruit that allowed him to physically transform into anyone he had touched. This ability made him a master of disguise, as he could impersonate anyone with stunning accuracy. While not directly used in combat, this power was instrumental in infiltration and deception.
Though Bentham was a skilled martial artist, he could not use his fighting style while transformed. However, his acting skills and clever strategy allowed him to win battles through trickery and well-timed strikes. His ability to impersonate powerful political figures, like Nefetari Cobra, also had massive implications for political manipulation. Kurozumi Higurashi also used the Mane Mane no Mi to impersonate various figures to further the Kurozumi clan’s power.
2. Kuku Kuku no Mi
User: Streusen
Debut: Chapter 868 (Manga), Episode 832 (Anime)
Streusen, a pirate and chef from the Big Mom Pirates, ate the Kuku Kuku no Mi, a Devil Fruit that allowed him to turn inanimate objects into food. While this power doesn’t have combat applications, it is extremely useful in daily life, especially for someone with Streusen’s culinary skills. The ability to turn objects into food instantly was useful in dire situations, like saving people from falling debris by turning it into a sponge cake.
While the food produced by the Devil Fruit has a terrible taste, it still serves as an endless source of nourishment, which is a convenient perk in the harsh world of One Piece. Streusen’s Devil Fruit also allowed him to produce food for Big Mom, satisfying her insatiable appetite.
3. Toki Toki no Mi
User: Kozuki Toki (Formerly)
Debut: Chapter 920 (Manga), Episode 910 (Anime)
Kozuki Toki’s Devil Fruit, the Toki Toki no Mi, allowed her to travel 20 years into the future. While not useful for combat, this ability provided her with the means to survive dangerous situations and ensure the survival of her son, Momonosuke. By sending him and his retainers into the future, she ensured that the resistance against Orochi and Kaido would remain strong.
Toki’s power was used mainly as a way to evade immediate threats, rather than to confront them head-on. The Toki Toki no Mi had one significant limitation—it could only move people forward in time, not backward—making it a tool for survival rather than warfare.
4. Poke Poke no Mi
User: Blamenco
Debut: Chapter 553 (Manga), Episode 461 (Anime)
Blamenco, a commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, possessed the Poke Poke no Mi, which allowed him to create pockets on his body that could store an infinite amount of items. This power was ideal for carrying an assortment of tools or supplies without the need for bags or storage, giving the user a significant advantage in resource management.
Though only seen using this ability to store a giant mallet, the potential applications are vast. In combat, Blamenco could theoretically store weapons, food, and even valuables, making this Devil Fruit more about utility than fighting. If Usopp had eaten a Devil Fruit, Oda mentioned that the Poke Poke no Mi would have been a fitting choice for him due to its practical uses for storing an arsenal of weapons.
5. Nomi Nomi no Mi
User: Dr. Vegapunk (Formerly?)
Debut: Chapter 1066 (Manga), Episode 1096 (Anime)
Dr. Vegapunk, the brilliant scientist of the One Piece world, is associated with the Nomi Nomi no Mi, a Devil Fruit that grants its user an eidetic memory and the ability to expand their brain to store vast amounts of knowledge. Vegapunk’s intelligence and innovative breakthroughs were made possible by this power, which allowed him to store an incredible wealth of scientific knowledge and continuously advance his understanding of various fields.
The Nomi Nomi no Mi has no direct combat abilities, but it serves as an intellectual tool, allowing its user to become an unparalleled expert in virtually any field. While the Devil Fruit caused Vegapunk’s head to expand, he compensated by connecting his brain to machines like Punk Records to accommodate its growth. This fruit is one of the most unique in the series, with no combat functionality but immense value in research, development, and knowledge-sharing.
