Tickets are now available for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, which will be showing in North American theaters starting February 28, 2025. Fans can also attend limited one-night-only IMAX early access screenings on February 26, 2025.
This film marks the first major collaboration between Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno’s studio, khara, and Sunrise, the long-time home of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. The project features a star-studded team of animation veterans who have helped create some of the most influential anime of the past three decades.
Directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, known for his work on Evangelion and the iconic anime FLCL, the film features FLCL and Revolutionary Girl Utena screenwriter Yoji Enokido as Series Supervisor and Screenwriter. Hideaki Anno himself also contributes to the screenplay. The character design is handled by Take, famed for his work on Katanagatari and Pokemon, while mechanical designs come from Ikuto Yamashita, whose credits include Evangelion and Shin Kamen Rider.
The film’s theme song, Plazma, was written, composed, and arranged by global J-pop sensation Kenshi Yonezu. The song, released digitally on January 20, 2025, topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart as of January 29. Yonezu also created the cover art, which features two of the film’s main characters, Amate Yuzuriha (Machu) and Nyaan. The Plazma music video quickly gained popularity, reaching No.1 on the YouTube trending chart on January 21, 2025.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- is a theatrical film that compiles re-edited episodes from the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV series, which was announced alongside the film. Release details for the TV series are yet to be confirmed. The film debuted in Japan on January 17, 2025, where it topped the box office, earning over 500 million yen within its first three days.
Plot Summary
The story follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high school student living in a peaceful space colony. Her life changes when she meets Nyaan, a war refugee who introduces her to the world of illegal mobile suit duels in Clan Battle. Under the alias “Machu,” Amate becomes a fierce competitor, piloting the GQuuuuuuX. Things take an unexpected turn when an unidentified Gundam, pursued by both the space force and the police, appears with its pilot, a boy named Shuji. This encounter sets the stage for a new era in their world.
