George Lowe, the comedian and voice actor best known for voicing Space Ghost, has passed away at 67. His family chose to keep the news private for a few days before it was publicly announced.
Lowe initially aimed for a career in radio but soon found himself working with Turner Networks. He became involved with TBS and the early promotions for Cartoon Network. When the network’s team in Atlanta sought new material, they decided to redub old Space Ghost footage, and Lowe was selected as the voice. This led to the creation of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Cartoon Network’s first original hit, which became a cornerstone for Adult Swim.
Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen shared a statement, saying, “It’s a sad day at Williams Street. You all knew him as Space Ghost (and all his other characters), but we knew him as himself, a true character in his own right, one who left an indelible mark on all of us at Adult Swim. Wherever you are, George, we hope you are getting enough oxygen.”
Lowe’s portrayal of Space Ghost became more popular than the original character, voiced by Gary Owens in the 1960s. Lowe’s performance is still iconic, and many associate him with the character rather than the original.
Although Space Ghost Coast to Coast hasn’t aired in a while, Lowe continued to embody the character through public appearances and even voice roles in video games. He voiced multiple characters in AdventureQuest and other titles by Artix Entertainment.
Artix shared a tribute on social media, recalling, “During our live recording sessions, he would riff the wildest, most unexpected things in his endless array of crazy voices… he never stopped.” He also mentioned that Lowe’s pop art, which many people didn’t know about, could be found in museums in Tampa.
George Lowe’s final role was voicing Space Ghost in an episode of Jellystone, which premiered last year.
