The acclaimed Death Note: The Musical is returning to the stage this November to mark its 10th anniversary. Based on the hit manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the production reimagines the iconic story of Light Yagami and his deadly notebook through music, drama, and emotional depth.
First debuting in 2015, the musical features music by American composer Frank Wildhorn and lyrics by Jack Murphy. It received critical acclaim for its ability to capture the psychological intensity of the original story while adding a fresh, musical perspective.
To celebrate its 10th year, the anniversary production will feature a mix of original and new cast members. Megumi Hamada will reprise her role as Rem, the shinigami, while Kenji Urai—who originally played Light Yagami—will return as Ryuk, the mischievous death god who sets the plot in motion.
Joining them are new cast members including Kato Seishiro and Ao Watanabe, who will share the role of Light Yagami. Hiroki Miura takes on the role of L, the genius detective pursuing Kira. Riho Sayashi will play Misa Amane, Riko (from J-pop group HUNNY BEE) appears as Sayu Yagami, and Kiyotaka Imai will play Sōichirō Yagami.
This version of Death Note offers a more emotional and introspective look at its characters. While staying faithful to the core plot, the musical explores the inner struggles and motivations behind each decision. Light Yagami, in particular, is portrayed with greater sympathy. His belief in creating a better world is more prominent, making his descent into darkness all the more tragic.
Blending suspense with a powerful score, Death Note: The Musical gives fans a unique way to experience the story’s high-stakes conflict and moral dilemmas. With both returning favorites and new talent on stage, the 10th anniversary production promises to honor the legacy of the original while offering something new for audiences around the world.
