The Chinese animation industry continues its global rise, with one of its most anticipated titles, Lord of the Mysteries, reaching a major milestone. The upcoming anime adaptation of the popular dark fantasy novel has officially completed production, according to a recent announcement from @LOTM_WORLD on X.
Produced by B.CMay Pictures and scheduled to stream on WeTV in 2025, the series is based on the cult-favorite web novel by author Cuttlefish That Loves Diving. Known for its rich world-building and genre-blending style, Lord of the Mysteries combines elements of steampunk, Lovecraftian horror, and Chinese fantasy. The story follows Klein Moretti, a modern-day man who awakens in the body of a mystic in a Victorian-era world teeming with secret cults and supernatural forces.
Originally serialized between 2018 and 2020 on platforms like Qidian and Webnovel, the novel attracted tens of millions of readers both in China and abroad. Its mix of suspense, mystery, and deep psychological themes helped it stand out from other web novels. The series became a massive online hit, sparking fan discussions and spawning a sequel, The Circle of Inevitability, which continues the story with a new protagonist and darker narrative.
The completed anime adaptation is expected to closely follow the novel’s atmospheric tone, emphasizing character development and psychological depth over fast-paced action. B.CMay Pictures, known for its high production values, aims to bring the story’s eerie and immersive world to life with cinematic visuals.
The franchise is also expanding beyond animation. A mobile RPG titled Code: Mystery is currently in development, built with Unreal Engine 5, highlighting ongoing efforts to turn Lord of the Mysteries into a broader multimedia property.
With the anime now finished and fan interest still running high, Lord of the Mysteries is poised to become a defining title in the growing world of Chinese animation—or donghua—and a major player on the international fantasy stage.
