Shin’ichirô Watanabe’s New Anime ‘Lazarus’ Gets English Dub Trailer and Release Date

by Hazel

The highly anticipated anime Lazarus, created by Shin’ichirô Watanabe, director of Cowboy Bebop, has officially unveiled its release date and an exciting English dub trailer. This action-packed sci-fi series follows a special task force of five agents on a mission to find a mad scientist and stop a dangerous project he set in motion.

Set to debut on Adult Swim in the U.S. on April 5, the trailer introduces us to the futuristic world of 2052. The society initially seems almost utopian, thanks to Dr. Skinner, a Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist who develops Hapuna, a miracle drug that cures every disease. This breakthrough drug ends pain and sickness, leading to a world where illness is no longer a concern — until an unexpected twist changes everything.

A few years after the introduction of Hapuna, it is revealed that Dr. Skinner had a hidden agenda. He secretly programmed the drug with a devastating flaw: anyone who takes it only has three years to live. This means the entire human population faces extinction unless a cure can be found. To resolve the crisis, a team of agents, known as Lazarus, is formed. Their mission: track down Dr. Skinner and force him to reverse the damage before time runs out.

The trailer for Lazarus showcases the show’s familiar Cowboy Bebop energy, with witty characters navigating a dire situation and a team with great chemistry. The anime also features stunning action sequences, which were choreographed by Chad Stahelski, the stuntman-turned-director known for the John Wick series and the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Sifu.

Animation studio MAPPA, which previously worked on Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan, brings Lazarus to life with its signature style.

Unlike many anime series, Lazarus is not based on an existing manga. The series is an original creation by Watanabe, who is also known for his work on Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, and the Animatrix. He has also written for Terror in Resonance and produced Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

Lazarus will premiere in the U.S. on Adult Swim’s Toonami on April 5 and will also be available for streaming on Max.
