The live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters Per Second will premiere in Japanese theaters on October 10. A new teaser visual was released today to mark the announcement.
The original 5 Centimeters Per Second anime was written, directed, and produced by Makoto Shinkai and released in 2007 by CoMix Wave Films. The live-action version is directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, with a screenplay by Fumiko Suzuki. The film is produced by Spoon. and distributed by Toho. Actor Hokuto Matsumura stars as the lead character, Takaki Tono.
In the United States, animation distributor GKIDS handles the home video release of the original anime.
According to CoMix Wave Films, the story follows Takaki and Akari, two childhood friends who grow close after attending the same elementary school. When their families move to different parts of Japan, the two are separated. A year later, Takaki boards a train from Tokyo to see Akari again. As the train moves forward, memories of their time together flood back. The film explores their hopes of reunion, unspoken feelings, and the quiet distance that time and space place between them.
The live-action film will revisit these themes across three connected chapters, offering a new take on the poignant story of love, longing, and lost innocence.
