AMC Networks announced on Wednesday that the classic 1985 original video anime (OVA) Vampire Hunter D will begin streaming on HIDIVE and Shudder starting Friday. The film will be available with both English subtitles and an English dub for viewers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Earlier this year, Vampire Hunter D returned to the big screen as part of a special theatrical event. HIDIVE, Shudder, Iconic Events Releasing, and Anime Expo’s AX Cinema Nights screened the film in over 600 theaters across the U.S. and Canada on April 9, 10, and 13 to celebrate the anime’s 40th anniversary.
Set in the distant future year of 12,090 AD, the story follows a bleak world dominated by supernatural forces and advanced technology. Humanity lives in scattered communities under the shadow of vampire overlords known as the Nobility. The plot centers on Doris Lang, who is marked to become the bride of the powerful Count Magnus Lee after he bites her. To escape her grim fate, Doris hires a mysterious and skilled vampire hunter known only as D—an enigmatic figure with a secretive past.
Vampire Hunter D was originally released in Japan in December 1985. Sentai Filmworks holds the license for the film and last issued a Blu-ray release in 2022.
